It’s a common topic of Wargamers chat, how long before the next must- have set of rules and/ or figures comes along and the next round of buying, painting and rebasing begins all over? Well Midgard may allay your fears. The base size is such that Impetvs and To the Strongest Bases can be utilised without modification. The Studz decided to put a toe in the water…

A 400 point battle of Midgard

We had “ El Sid” himself along to guide us through the process. 400 points is the larger setup recommended but the three of us got into it in no time. The army size may be on the small size but it’s the role of heroes that is emphasised. Of course I had to be El CID!

Who remembers LotR Dol Amroth knights: I’d never part with this figure!
Seve Alvarez capitan of the crossbows!
Inspired by my 1066 contemporaries, I went for archers in front of spear, with the knights at the rear!

Sid’s ( ed. This is going to get confusing!🫤) Moorish host contained wall to wall spear including the infamous Black Guard ( think the Unsullied with attitude).

Moorish array intent on plunder!

The Moors opened with their right wing Jinetes pouring around the woods to assault the Spanish. Their first victim to a javelin throw was Capitan of knights, Pedro Berműdez. One hero down in the second turn!

Too young to die!
The Moors begin the attack on the Christian left!

Before too long, the Moors, in classic Sid style, were piling through the Christian light horse. John looked on askance as his men disappeared homeward!

The swirling melee on the Christian left!

The Moors were also advancing at speed in the centre, brushing aside my skirmishing archers, intent on slaughter!

Unfair fighting!

El Cid sensed danger and did what any true knight should do, charge!!!! Midgard combat is simple and brutal. In short order the Christian knights had torn a hole in the advancing Moors.

The CID leading from the rear!

The CID was less sure of his supporting peons on his flank!

Could the line hold?

The rules mechanism was easy to understand and you really are forced to think about how you will intervene, either helping combats or troop movements. You also need to consider risk to your person. In short a great rules mechanism for command decisions.

The peons hold for now!
The charge of Alvar Fāñez!

Not to be outdone by the Cid, Count Fáñez charges the infidel centre. Issuing a challenge to the Moorish Emir, the brave knight was confident of victory, utilising “ battle smiter!” in the duel.

Faith versus fury!!

In three short bouts of combat the Moorish leader bit the dirt and the family are left bereft!

Who will tell the family???😢

The Christians were elated and redoubled their efforts along the line. It was an intense struggle but the tide was turning as the Moors used their archery to augment the assault.

The crossbowmen are lost but their commander stands his ground and fights on alone!

Alvarez, master of crossbow, gained reputation points for his stand! Reputation is a neat mechanism for encouraging players to act heroically! The CID was gaining reputation but his followers were slipping away.

The Cid claims another victim!
Maximum respect to Fáñez who slaughters the Black Guard. The Moors should have chained them together as in later battles!
The Moors attack from the rear!

The failure of the left wing opened up an opportunity that the wily Moor sized upon. Attacking from the rear, Christian fighting spirit collapsed but not before sending another unit of Jinetes to paradise! The Moors had won by one point.

What a titanic struggle!

We had greatly enjoyed our first venture into Midgard. All the mechanisms are easy to understand and most importantly great fun! We had little difficulty in utilising the rules and the game proceeded at a good pace. The influence of heroes is decisive and reminds me of SAGA; real boys’ own derring do! But, that’s what we love!

Alvar Fáñez! We will remember your deeds!

See you soon!

Adios!
