Mike Lane’s exquisite model collection is once again on display with this recreation of the attack on Z force, 10th December 1941. It was an underestimation of Japanese airpower that led to the disasterous loss of the Prince of Wales and the Repulse.

The Prince of Wales
 HMS Repulse
They are both Navis Neptun 1/1200 scale models – bought as seen. The aircraft are Tumbling Dice and the Flak explosions are 3D printed by a friend. The smoke trails are pipe cleaners. The stands are from Litko. 

Below is the high level bombing attack on the Prince of Wales by nine Japanese Nell bombers.


This is followed by the low level attack on Repulse by Betty torpedo bombers, here under heavy flak fire.

    The pipe cleaners are a great idea. Both the ships and planes look really good and the markers add a lot of visual appeal. Thanks for sharing first rate.

    Great post and models Mike! Just played Victory in the Pacific remotely with my old USMA roommate Dave (he’s in Maryland while I’m in Massachusetts). I was the Japanese and had early dice failures so the Prince of Wales and the Repulse survived the first turn air raids. I focused on the British fleet (which I did eliminate) and was -as is normal for that game – ultimately overwhelmed by US industrialized might in shipbuilding. So this was fun to see after Independence Day!

      Those flat top battles were amazing weren’t they? The size and power of those ships was awesome! Some classic war films from the era too!

        The US got very lucky at Midway when the TBD’s drew down the CAP which allowed for the Dauntlesses to scratch multiple flattops.
