I thought I’d post the answers to last Wednesday’s quiz. Winning laurels go Mr. Lane for his incisive knowledge of all things Roman. There were some truly dreadful answers this week! But then again, it is much easier for the person setting the questions! Military maxims next week!

The answers….

1. The punishment was officially whipping for the sleepy Vigin. If the consequences were particularly detrimental then the unfortunate could be buried alive. Rome did fall of course twenty years after the flames were allowed to go out. Coincidence? I think not!

2. In 18B.C. Emperor Augustus had his grand-daughter Julia’s ” love child” murdered! Tough love indeed!

3. The Emperor Tiberius was 77 when he died!

4. Caligula was a favourite with the army as a child and they nick-named his ” little boots!” Aaaaah!

5. The Romans invaded three times; bonus points here. 54 and 55 BC, and full scale invasion in A.D. 43.

6. Claudius may have had his tonsils tickled by a poisoned feather ( administered by a quack doctor!)

7. Corbulo recommended the shovel as the soldier’s best friend. And no he wasn’t supposed to hit people with it! ( names withheld to protect the innocent!)

8. Nero kicked his pregnant wife Poppea to death because she scolded him about his gambling!

9. The colours of the racing factions were red, white, blue and green. The extreme answer to stadia violence occurred when the gates were closed and a reported one hundred thousand rioters were killed on the orders of the Emperor. Simple but effective!

10. The God of hinges was Cardea and not Walmartus!

11. Vesuvius erupted on 24th August 79.

12. Commodus reputedly killed a hundred bears in one afternoon in the arena but he held the record for despatching five hippos in one day with his bare hands?  This was without doubt the question that got the worst answers! You should all be very ashamed!😫😂😳😉

Yes, I know they are lions ( I couldn’t find any contemporary photos of hippo slaying however hard I looked!😳)

Big day tomorrow for our American comrades tomorrow of course, have a great weekend!

      1. Not really sure what that says about me! 😉 If I was on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” and the first question was “How many people are there in a Premier League football team” I’d have to ask the audience! I’ve enjoyed the quizzes though, so thanks for posting them! 🙂

    1. So glad you enjoyed it. Terry Deary’s “Dangerous days of the Roman Empire” is compulsive reading! It’s Horrible Histories for adults and great fun!

      1. I used to enjoy watching Horrible Histories with the kids. My daughter grew to love history so much she hopes to go to Uni and do a degree in it next year.
