With so much changing it was a blessed relief to return to walking into a newsagent and buying a magazine. Now I know one founding member of the Tercio is banned from said establishment but in their defence he has yet to buy a single magazine in nearly forty years of “ perusal.” Perhaps, “ John” ( because that’s his name!) is on to something and the printed media is moribund and soon to be eclipsed.

This month’s copy of Wargames: Soldiers and Strategy is actually an interesting read. Guy Bowers has thankfully omitted mentioning a quote from “ The Art of War” which is unusual and to his credit. The miniatures reviews are extensive and tempting. I do wish they would go the whole Vae Virtus and show painted minis though. Media heavy weight Rick Priestly is always good copy and the theme of Scandinavia is original and well covered. Love Kraknes is responsible for a number of articles and they are of a very high standard. My favourite is of course Michael Leck whose knowledge of Scandinavia and wider wargaming are unsurpassed. So why am I querying print media I hear you ask?

Michael Leck: the man who brought circle bases to Wales!

The term is “ legacy media”, expensive TV studios and expensive print runs. Alongside a straight jacket comes a certain world view. The interviewer or author has to be the next crusading David against the nasty people who may disagree with law breaking , foreign domination and imported crackpot ideas. We’ve moved on. If a police officer is already guilty before the trial, with compensation to the victim’s family, already given, what is the point of following the trial! The dinosaurs follow the story just daring the deplorables to counter the narrative of protester good and authority bad. Well if you don’t like the reporting, don’t watch their “ news” and we haven’t been, in record numbers.

I love my hobby and I will continue to buy magazines. Mercifully few contributors to the hobby have metaphorically taken the knee and described their “privilege” as usually white, middle class and male gamers. Rather, I’ve come to value the micro- hobby of blogs and single person webspaces. I enjoy knowing that Pat in Castlemaine, Australia is experiencing cold weather and Mark Morin is in the USA and running another one of his legendary prize draws. In short, we have rediscovered “ community.”

So, are there pitfalls to a community of internet individuals? Firstly, I steer away from Facebook for mixed motives. Sure it’s great to get “likes” for my latest project but one snotty comment can seriously ruin my day. I’m not exactly a sensitive type but comments have a capacity to linger I’m afraid. We are evolved to be aware to danger, far more than pleasure and social media can be so destructive. Do bloggers end up preaching to the converted or playing for ratings? Well I’d be interested to know your thoughts?

Best wishes

Mike B

The old versus the new but both with flaws: in the above case a murderous love of violence and a heightened Sex drive! ( both to be seen in Cardiff!)

  2. Well you got me thinking on this one Mike. Firstly on the subject of magazines I tend to dip my toe in as and when, mainly because I have yet to find a publication which matches my interest. For example I am not a gamer but bought the last issue of Wargames Illustrated because it had an article on Heraldry and Knights which interested me. As for the blog. It started as a personal audit trail but is now so much more. At the hub of our little community is a great nucleus of people who are polite and considerate who offer encouragement as well as pats on the back and constructive comment. Fortunately snotty comments don’t seem to exist in this small world of bloggers which is just as well becaise for some reason one negative comment trumps a thousand good ones! There is also a personal side to it as you have highlighted in your post too. All in all long may it continue. 🙂

    1. Well you and the regulars ( Mark, Pete, John, Patrick etc.) are what got me thinking! The new technology could be amazing as a forum for like minded hobbyists to meet and chat. It just dawned on me just how few magazines I actually keep now for reference or interest now we have pin interest and web. The other thing of course is space and whether by back bedroom can hold much more combustible material.
      Thanks for your thoughts!

  3. Just yesterday I deleted Twitter and Reddit from my Smartphone. Everyday hobby related and wider political issues is just not good for a positive outlook on life. Especially given the quality of discussion on social media. Not sure if classic media is better. For Wargaming a print magazine once in a while is obviously cool, but I agree, the blogossphere allows to focus on individuals that do interesting stuff. No drama, just hobby and even some thought provoking posts on issues, but without the toxicity of Twitter etc. Will be interesting how everything develops. Maybe we move back so to say, to formats that do not require to look at them every five minutes.

    1. Thanks for your comments! I’m so far behind the times with technology it’s worrying but I am with you on the stress factor! I made the mistake of watching an old Edward Snowden YouTube clip and that made even more paranoid r.e. Phones that don’t switch off and location finders through Apps! I hope to get YouTube channel up and running this year but I don’t want it to look like grandfather TV! Twitter would get me suicidal!

  4. An interesting post! 🙂 I’ve seen what social media can do to people at pretty close range and so I’ve never had anything to do with it! I just enjoy following the blogs I follow (if that makes sense)!

    1. Thanks mate- I think future generations will laugh at how naive we were in obsessing over tweets and likes. I wholly agree that choice is vital!
The next question maybe is it some algorithm that is providing us with so called” cloice!”

  5. I tend to adopt a 2 article rule when it comes to magazines (wargaming or otherwise): if there are at least two articles in it that I wan to read I buy it. If not it stays on the shelf. The only exception is if there is a multi part feature I’m following.

I know what you mean about community. Blogging is by far the most pleasant corner of the web I’ve found.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    1. Two article rule is interesting. Without sounding like a dinosaur, a magazine has to be pretty good if as some of them are, they are eight pounds!
      Video blogs next????

  6. Lovely post Mike and thanks for the shout out. I bought the Miniature Wargames issue (February 2021) because it discussed Wars of Ozz and that’s all I have done. I have DOZENS of golf magazines that I will read – eventually I hope – but just keeping up with blogging gets to be hard sometimes. Plus a hobby giveaway does slow one down (and I hope you’ll enter soon!). Blogging is my go-to now – and everything TIM just wrote I say ditto.

  7. wow thanks mate for mentioning me in a intelligent discussion, the Partner ( not long ago I had a wife ) would be amazed ,lucky the young en has whipped her of to SA to see the TA’s work on the Tiny house.
Its good to get the lads, tilt on were we are going in the way of new, in the last week I have read one national paper and it was so bad, just full of negatives. Give me the local, its upbeat and positive and bloody brimming with that old fashion thing called community spirit!
Sorry not this crap about “reaching out” or “inclusiveness” that the coffee Latte set in the big cities waffle on about!
Fuck ! I’m surprised your paying Eight quid for a magazine ,I thought it was only us over here that got stung!
