Just three months to Cardiff’s must attend tournament! The rules are of course Simon Miller’s excellent “ To the Strongest.” The venue is Cardiff’s excellently appointed Firestorm Games and for once I’m going to put some thought into my tournament army.

2023 Army list: Spanish

Small but robust, my Spaniards more than held their own in 2023. Mark Emms took me down in the first game but he had gone knight heavy and avoided my spearmen effectively. the other two games also provided a steep learning curve….

When I say knight heavy: as heavy as 2D prints allow!
I felt more confident putting my infantry against his bow!
Lesson #1: don’t spread yourself too thinly!
Lesson #2 heavy spear were rather good!
Lesson #4 don’t pull aces!
Lesson #5 longer ranged crossbows ( both in mixed spear units and here in crossbow units are a good counter to knights.
So, an army based on solid infantry ( with crossbows ) held out well but second flank command of light troops was problematic!
Game two against Sid! A good deal of time wasted on complimenting him on his painting skills!
Sid went javelin heavy with Early Italians and they could not hold out against crossbow bolts!
A rare victory against the Swansea magician! An early light army perhaps meeting its nemesis in knights and heavy infantry that shoot?
Oh dear; it’s game three and the table was bowing under the weight of Teutonic Knights! If only we were fighting on ice!
I had high hopes for crossbows but elite knights can shrug off hits

The crunch in game three was audible. What did I conclude? Heavy foot are reliable and missile support is a no- brainer! If you are using knights then two was maybe not enough. Lights on an open battlefield are going to be vulnerable. So no great surprises but I also failed to appreciate the scoring. It’s the medals that count not technically win or loss! My tourney army has to take coins in quick succession and in 2024 rallying can cost you.

Next I will review 2024 and see if anything improved? Doubtful I know but I welcome your thoughts….

Godendag 2025 awaits!

  1. Nice looking troops! 🙂 I’ll have to leave this up to you I’m afraid! I completely lack the planning and coordination skills needed to make a pre-gunpowder army work on the battlefield! Actually, my planning and coordination skills aren’t much better for later armies either!

    1. Hi John!
Yeah, I feel your pain brother! A think a knightly host or a massive barbarian onslaught are my two options I.e. grind forward and kill!
      Great comment!
