Friday night gaming: is a change necessary for four aside?

As I look back on 2024 the standout games for me have been multi- player clashes with three or four players per side. One suggestion for developing the club was to play such a mega-game maybe once a month.

Five aside action from the Bulge

One or two points have to be mentioned as we consider what we have tried before. Firstly, the work involved. I personally enjoy setting up a big game but it’s not for everyone. It is a time commitment and getting people together all on the same day at the same time can be problematic. One of my pet hates are Facebook lurkers who say they are coming and then don’t show up. We have five main contributors now who I know we can rely upon. I don’t intend advertising events until these main players have committed so as to avoid any disappointment.

Memoir 44: simple but an option.

Those who follow our club, Cardiff Dice Studz, on Facebook will no doubt be aware of the latest discussion on rules for megagames. In my opinion, such games should not just be one player rules with more figures. The recent multiplayer ancients battle of Catalonian Plains benefitted from Simon Miller’s excellent To the Strongest rules. We had just two players who were familiar with the system but the game went smoothly with four newbies and the laziest member of the club in attendance.

Hexes and boardgames rules heresy?

If ancients was covered then the gunpowder age utilises Black Powder and Battlecry. For 28mm the scenarios are just perfect. And so Command and Colors for World War Two?

Brecóurt Manor scenario

And I was off! Memoir 44 uses plastic miniatures just like Battlecry. Why not use my massive Flames of War collection to play the period. We have been toying with hex based games for a few years now and so the idea came to fruition…

A lone 15mm Elefant fits nicely in a 10cm hex.
No need for a huge number of charts and tables; Memoir 44 is fast!
I used a simple 6 sided dice; 1 being a miss, 2 forces a retreat, 3 and 4 hits infantry, cavalry and guns, 5 is a hit on armour and 6 is a “ special”

In a quick trial game, I brought on three Shermans to take on the German juggernaut. As an anti- armour specialist I gave the Elefant four damage and the ability to kill tanks on a roll of 6. As heavily armoured, the Elefant could ignore a retreat result.

Three Sherman’s face the foe.

The Sherman’s as a medium tank gets just three damage and no special roll unless the 76mm variant.

With just one throw of dice the first round is completed. A five gets a hit, as does a six for the heavy German gun. A two means the lead Sherman is falling back.
“ Fury” is activated and rolls a three which is useless, a two for the enemy to retreat but which heavy armour negates. The powerful 76 mm gun scores a hit though on a six!
Sherman #two accelerates forward to take a flank shot; two special hits mean that the Elefant is on its last legs.

Ranges are as per the rules. There are rules for cover and terrain which I need to try out but I don’t foresee a problem.

Simple and clear!

The bases from Flames of War seem to fit just fine and there is even a nod to Squad leader with leaders adding dice to combats.

So far then it all looks good. A fast and easy to understand set of rules that will need a minimum of explanation. Further expansion to other units would be easy to fit.

A beutepanzer or “ stolen” panzer aids the assault. Light armour gets only two hits and one less dice for shooting.

We shall have to see how this project pans out but the omens are good. The ruleset can be downloaded for free and I have a hexed mat to trial a proper game on the weekend. As always happens, the madness consumed me and I’m considering a 28mm version on a six inch hex. Madness I know….

Hexes are the shape of 2025!

If you have any experience with playing Memoir 44 I’d love your thoughts? I do feel better now that my ww2 collection is once again being used. The club has dealt with playing cards, will they take to coloured dice? We shall see…

  1. Memoir ’44, now there is an excellent game.

    1. I hoped you’d like it!!!!! Honestly rediscovering all those C and C titles has been such a motivation! Came to the conclusion that the gaming part is the most important! And we both love “armor!”

      1. I’ve not tried the other titles, other than the medieval/magic one. I’d come across the ACW one, but didn’t realise there were others.
I can imagine they are all similar-ish.
        Yeah, I’m a bit of a treadhead.

  2. I notice some plain mdf hex panels in here, what size are they and where are the sourced? I have been using hexes for some scenic elements in SAGA mostly trees but mine may be too large as they are home-made.

    1. Ebay Lazerkris Ltd! Great trader!
I’ve cut up a whole gaming mat to make six inch wide hexes for Command and Colors style games! Don’t think they need mdf base but I’ll use some for foxholes and the like!

  3. I think it is a great system. Not only as a greaty introductory set but also ideal for muliplayer games.

I played in this Market Garden game and really enjoyed it. My friend uses 15mm models on 100mm kalistra hexes so it does work really well.

    Cheers,

  5. It is a great system for multi-player. I have played in a few “Overlord” games (3 boards and 3 players a side) and was loads of fun.

    1. Thanks Shaun! Those massive games are what caught my attention! Lots of drama but the players not bogged down in too much detail. The command system for three player games too I thought was interesting!🤨
