Long term supporter of our Tercio, Mark Clarke, commented recently on Face- twit, “ Wargames Foundry: reassuringly expensive!” Yes dear reader, we live in the era of the two pounds 28mm miniature. Please don’t switch off, this isn’t an article on tariffs preventing kickstarter CEO’s claiming their 6 figure salaries. Rather, can we justify paying six pounds for a monthly magazine?

Some similarities but still unmissable!

Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy magazine from the Netherlands was an absolute must this month. Bonaparte in the Second Coalition doesn’t sound like it’s going to fly off the shelves at the local store but for me it was sheer gold, concentrating on the Marengo campaign. Great photos and scenarios; I could forgive the rehash of period figures from an earlier edition.

What twenty pounds of lead could look like!

The themed magazine obviously is a risk for the publisher. Too specific and the average gamer maybe deterred but WSS is my usual must purchase magazine.

Wargames Illustrated

Wargames Illustrated is a more selective purchase. It did deep dive into a Battlefront storefront but has since widened its coverage. Free Epic Scale Celts sweetened the deal but this is the magazine format that I think is in danger from the internet and YouTube. Six or seven main articles that do or do not catch up your interest. One of the biggest changes in purchase decisions is of course that such magazines are not the main source of minis info and events. Adverts do have a tendency to linger in the butterfly like imagination of the average gamer.

The way forward?

So in one day I bought magazines worth the price of twenty or so miniatures! This was an exceptional bank holiday; don’t judge me! I am really trying to go for quality not quantity. The magazines are still great. Their storage is also an issue as I never did make the change to digital editions.

My final purchase was Dice and Lead from Italy. This was my idea of the future magazine. Superb photos and great articles. What else would you expect from the team behind Impetvs? It does do that Wargamers’ trait of recounting history rather than providing gaming advice but I can forgive the publishers that.

The perfect Bank holiday

So a three day break and some great reading. I really am hopeful for these magazines’ future. I won’t be buying all of them every month but if it is magazines or unpainted plastic then you could do worse.

  1. my go to magazine is also WSS so much so I have a subscription. The only thing I don’t like is the double page articles of text that to my mind need breaking up with some images or split overleaf so as not to look so daunting. As for WI, it is more of a coffee table magazine with lots of eye candy but not always the best articles. Miniature Wargames seems to be one that has good articles but indifferent photography- or is it the figures available to photograph? So I only buy these last two occasionally and usually as they have themed editions!

    1. Wise words Philip! WSS is great: Miniature Wargames seems very thin! I wonder why they don’t reach out to some of the top painters. Too many substandard fantasy / sci fi articles for me!

  3. I have drifted back to buying magazines since the Covid lockdown, I do think in an age of unbelievable amounts of data these magazines now provide a service of sifting for information. Like you say if the info ain’t what you want you don’t buy: At least all three signpost the main contents. I agree WSaS is all round the best, I am interested in your Italian mag, cost of shipping? WI seems to have drifted from its thematic style – I wonder if that’s beginning to bite their sales rather than drive them? I do buy the occasional one for a specific article – they covered the battle of dorking, Prussians invading England if I recall. Likewise I occasionally buy miniature wargames and that has been more not less in the last year as some if their freebies proved useful for analogue hobbies painting challenges. The next big threat is AI authored text. This will simply enable yet more volume. I just hope they start advertising their magazines are truly ChatGPT free.

    1. All good points fellah! Lead and Dice is from Amazon: retails for about a tenner? Great pictures and content.
AI is frightening: in list of what ifs along with coloured prints and 3 d video games….

  4. Yep when it comes to text or the written word we will be drowning in the stuff soon enough. Just hope there will still be Wargames blogs written by humans…..

  5. Frankly I don’t bother with any of them anymore. I do think they are overpriced and not very interesting or informative, I can get most of the info from a google searc.
