A package from the Little Corporal always lifts the spirits. My latest impulse purchase was “ Issos and Gaugamela” published by Cérigo Éditions of VaeVictus fame. Advertised as Osprey in style I dived in…

Osprey- like!

48 pages of first class writing awaited me. The prose is written in a conversational style but motors along at a fine pace through these two battles. Credit must go to the translator, Maria Ojeda. Maps as you will know are a particular interest of mine and we are well served with cartography.

Artwork by Giuseppe Rava

Well the book does pay a passing resemblance to the aforementioned Osprey publishing but without the uniform information. For uniform details you shall have to look elsewhere. A number of references are given, including our favourite author on ancient warfare, Victor Hanson. What you do get are several amazing illustrations by Rava that I am determined to get on my gardenroom wall. The pictures are amazing and made the book a classic. I only wish is that they were positioned landscape rather than suffer a central crease!

Ten out of ten for this one then. Available in Uk from the Little Corporal webstore. Definately a series to look out for.
