After a long week I was looking forward to the weekend! Friday night gaming was great ( more of this later Ed.) but Saturday was a dud! Waiting around for a tradesman is such a bore! Thankfully my morale was restored by a couple of hours in the mancave and then Sunday I was booked to play the old mall- cop himself Martin. Things were looking up!

Chivalry and style!

SAGA has long been a favourite but the newest supplement was unexplored territory. It did however get me thinking about why we fight ( wargames).

With around forty minis per side, SAGA is eminently collectible. Who wouldn’t be tempted by the exquisite photos contained within Age of Chivalry. Martin had done a great job on painting several Perry boxsets, again relatively cheap and great sculpts.

Style and added science!

But, we were in the Fifteenth century so not only is plate armour at its height of development but gunpowder is making its presence felt! We both elected to recruit artillery and proceeded to blast away. Thankfully my firepower was more effective than Martin’s.

My Yorkists in the foreground: showering the Lancastrians with arrows and cannon balls!

If you are new to SAGA then I heartily recommend the system. It’s so easy to pick up and gives a great game, full of heroic action and daring-do.

Our game was no exception; my knights and billmen advanced to take out the mercenary crossbows before they could exact a toll. The battle boards are quite different between Lancaster and York. My archer support was decisive. This is definately an era of all arms cooperation.

It’s also the era of Fortune! Seven saves for my knights!

With his left struggling, Martin sent in his knights. I smarted behind my defences; billmen, bow and an artillery piece.

Charge!

The heroic Lancastrian knights ran down my gunners! I smarted no more! The battle boards decided that a was granted a reprieve. My billmen took on the knights and….

Not one hit for Martin’s knights!

With not a single hit, the footmen upset the old social order! The House of York was victorious!

What a game! All that is good about our hobby! Thrills and spills in a great spirit! The weekend turned out ok after all!
