Meaning of “Cheese”: using tactics, strategies, or exploits that are considered cheap, unfair, or require little skill to achieve an advantage or win. These tactics often circumvent the intended gameplay or difficulty, relying on loopholes, bugs, or imbalances within the game.

Cheese?🧀

“ Bring your cheesiest army!” Sid said, “ I need to practise for Britcon tournament.” I sniggered, I’d beaten him before with my Bactrian cheese companions: lance and bow combination super troops!

A small phalanx to hold the centre…
Indian foot to contest rough ground. What could go wrong?

How does one describe Sid? A man who is cunning, smart, a Machiavellian prince ( from Swansea?). As Alexander the Great kept a copy of Homer’s Illiad under his pillow on his campaigns, it is rumoured that Sid retains a copy of To the Strongest wargames rules under his duvet! This game was never going to be easy!

Oh God! The grin of the tiger!

First came a river: difficult terrain across the whole table!

Then add steep hills for his mountain loving Samnites to feel at home!
Double armed horse with no where to ride!
Skirmishers to contest the river! Phalanx to await developments!
My Indians hoped to find refuge in the rough! Some hope!
Wall to wall Samnites and a central cavalry reserve!
Hold them!?
Elephant screen to support our skirmish line!
Oh no: he’d spotted my error! Elephant screen rampage away from Samnite javelins and take the Companions with them!
The look of innocence!
El Sid precedes to roll up my right wing!
We were making more of a fight of it on the left: medium infantry really don’t like lancers!
Wow! The card gods hate me!
Cry Havoc stalled his cavalry attack but it was too little too late!
The crushing of my right took me down: being beat by five medals😭

Well I had been truly out cheesed! A great battle plan from the maestro Sid and a plan that exploited my weak flank. I can’t really complain….. but, I will!!!!

Yellow card issued by Dux: overly competitive play🥺

  2. In my defence, I selected a river to try to nullify those lancers and pike blokes. Then got lucky enough that it stayed on table.
Then those cheesy Bactrians bottled it and let me cross the river.

    1. My pikemen can’t swim and my lancers don’t like hills!!!! Back to the drawing board for me! Perhaps a bridging unit and artillery????
