Eleven years ago…..

Friday evenings are my time. It’s the end of the week and I deserve it. Six hours away from all responsibilities and domestic concerns. A voice from upstairs calls out, “ If you are going to Firestorm Games, I’m coming…..”

The last time, my two showed an interest!

So, the boys in school are into Warhammer 4ok. Of course I had to take him to my club nights again.

2015 style

It had been ten years but the Evil Empire had risen again! In the attic lies an unloved plastic box. They were loved once more. On the plus side. My boys are interested in gaming, not what I call proper wargaming i.e. historical gaming. I did share this with my boys, and then I listened to myself. I was saying that GW wanted to put less “war” into wargaming for increased profits. Did I really want to expose them to real war in game form?

We live in strange times. They reminded me that I had told them that hell would freeze over before I let them join the army to defend Starmer and a state that hates the white working class male. They answered that they had been lectured on military history all their lives and now I was telling them not to think defending our country was a worthy ideal. Consistent parenting is not my forte!

Fascist!

We entered the lair of the beast: a Warhammer store. I had warned them that they would be immediately pounced on by a shop assistant a little too eager for sales. They actually found the assistant charming and engaging. The store was a riot of colour and interest; the models were fantastic and they were hooked.

Sixty pounds gets you four models.

I thought about how I would explain their purchases. Would my wife think my miniatures cost even half as much? I reasoned with my father in law; sixty pounds gets you an afternoon of peace, years of play and an asset that goes up in value. He wasn’t convinced…

My glue is sacrificed for a quiet afternoon

I do like this generation. Would they smuggle their purchases out in a plain brown bag? Well no, they carried them out proudly. Their models are cool and what I do is up to me! Space marines are cool: toxic masculinity in armour. Never apologise for something you love. I loved 2025- the wheel has turned and suddenly the world is wondering who will defend the weak. Life lessons from Games Workshop space marines: they will be horrified. I can see the banners now, “make Warhammer great again.” “ Let’s celebrate the war in Warhammer!” Perhaps it’s better that they aren’t into historical prototypes.

35 pounds and worth every penny ( it was his godfather’s money btw!)

So the models are bought, glued together and next comes the painting. We have two new club members and a new family hobby. I’d be interested to know of your experiences and whether GW is in fact the gate way drug for historical gaming. Painting Tau over Christmas, who would have thought it!

Take your pick!

Merry Christmas everyone!

  1. So it’s a good thing then? 🙂 It probably means you can spend Christmas getting some painting done though!

  3. Never forget The Battle at the Farm!

Some of us never grow out of the Space Marines, Sci-Fi and Fantasy stuff, but as we get older, we certainly supplement it with a few Historicals to round out the hobby.

    1. I’m certainly hoping that’s the pattern for my two but I have to admit GW make it very tempting to dive in. I did play what is now Old World but having to learn 40k from scratch. My sons already beat me at chess, Hoth and I’d never live it down if they started beating me on the tabletop😢🤧

  4. Is that the recent Hoth game based on Memoir ’44? If so, there’s a pretty easy sidestep there if they’re really enjoying it but may be interested in a bit of a tweak/playing with new/different unit types.

There’s also the game Tanks! from GF9 that got reskinned into World of Tanks a few years ago. Around these parts there’s still a fair few starter sets floating about at fire sale prices, especially for the modern version. Plays pretty simply, is fun, cheap and also a nice, friendly way to broaden their horizons from 40k. After all – what boy (of any age) doesn’t want to play a tank game? They can even commit sacrelige and paint their shermans blue and add Ultramarine decals! (as I saw on youtube from another father and kids combo when I was looking at the game initially…)

    1. Great idea!!!!! I did have to calm them down playing Memoir 44 as they started beating me there too!!!!! We played with 15mm miniatures to continue the plan of luring them in!!!
I did remember seeing a Heroes of Normandie variant with 40k pieces- all beautifully produced. I’ll look out for Tanks though. We also have the Total War computer series to delve into!!!!

      1. I see you’ve already been down that path! 😀

I have that Heroes of Normandie box, though I’ve not yet gotten around to playing it. Shame Devil Pig went down the gurgler. I would have liked to get their Stalingrad variant as well.

They’ll have you playing Space Marine 2 next – it does have a 3-player co-op campaign mode as well as the regular 3-player co-op missions and then team multiplayer deathmatch! 😀
