Gamers generally hate basing. Basing doesn’t decrease the lead pile. Basing doesn’t involve buying new metal masterpieces. But, Steve’s obsession with Kings of War has completely changed my attitude. I am so impressed with how the Kings of War system has transformed basing from a chore to a major asset to selling the rules. If you haven’t witnessed said revolution, it is the footprint that is important. Whether you use the regular number of figures is up to you ( although some KoW comps do run guidelines for acceptable numbers. So if a “regiment” is ten 20mm squares, why not glue six on the large base and use the rest for scenary. I thought I’d take a stab at rebasing my Huns in such a manner.

A modest start was made with my super new figures hot off the Lurkio website. I decapitated an ornament from Rome and we were off. I scoured the spares box for more ruins and statues. The bases were Impetvs size, 80mm X 60mm, so gave enough room for a satisfying amount of groundwork. They can still be used for L’art de la Guerre, plus the up and coming To the Strongest and Kings of War. Double base DBA is fine too of course. And also, if that wasn’t enough the bases are fine for Commands and Colors.

The other advantage of Ann’s “paint the figures you own month” is that you have a finished army. I had enough bases of light horse, I “needed” three bases of heavy Hun cavalry from Lurkio , then another idea struck.Your typical nomad horseman is fine following Attila across the ruins of Rome but also can substitute for Tartars to worry Christendom up to the fifteenth century and China beyond that. A swift order to Firepower Games gave me the numbers to double the host. But , it’s finished ( apart from the hairy barbarian foot!)

Four pictures of the Lurkio minis- I love these sculpts. Simon Hall produces such amazing figures and the range is expanding fast. The figure above with the striped shield is an Essex imposter by the way, painted by the legendary Simon Clarke.

The three pictures above are my older Old Glory miniatures! Veterans but much loved. Bought from Evesham many moons ago but still ready to scare the unwary.

Above are the beginnings of Attila’s barbarian foot. A few generals and heroes for ADLG and TtS.

The last to be painted but also great characterful minis. By Fire and Sword miniatures are so stylish. The lads who came to Salute are great advertisers for their product and the hobby generally.

So there it is, one month has passed and the horde is completely based. With a lot of sand and MDF, one thousand years of wargaming awaits…….
Stay safe and keep painting!
Michael
