The first in an occasional series whereby the members of the Tercio are allowed behind the curtains of Andrew Unwin’s hobby coterie. We may be financially embarrassed in comparison but God bless him for this opportunity. As my old Grandmother used to say, ” Time enough to count your hand when the game is done!” To Andrew, we are grateful, we stand speechless at the quality of your extravagance. The words from here on, are unmistakeable his own…..

The Tercio, Friday Committee meeting , Jan. 1993

Andrew wrote;

“Andrew, the Spaniard jipped, shaking from stem to stern. ” Your miniatures are lovely! They do you such credit!” Whilst one lives for one’s Art, so to speak, and cares little for public acclaim and all that sort of thing, I thought it apposite to give those boyos from Wales something to aim at. I paint all these miniatures myself and rather welcome jealousy. Miguel was positively green with envy, like a restaurant diner who has bitten into a bad oyster, and I don’t altogether blame him. Yes, the collection is developing splendidly and one hopes that you are candid in your admiring comments. So, on with the show…

Although a little “Welsh” for some tastes, the above warriors spring from my Gallic army. Recently my manservant has been attaching tufts and sprucing up the bases ready for the competition circuit in the Fall.

They may move like a buffalo pulling its foot out of a swamp, but golly do they pack a punch. A rarity in the Roman army but I do believe that Claudius brought a few to Blighty. This particular one is named after my near mama.

Wargames armies are like a delicate flower that needs constant nurturing. The research for these rather athletic slave girls took absolute eons and is still ongoing!

I haven’t the foggiest who these medieval fellows represent but I surely must be related to some if not all of them. As stirring as a dose of salts with knobs on, these Front Rank chappies are just the ticket to smash the oiks on the medieval battlefield.

It’s not just the cut and thrust stuff, the collection also includes these dramatically posed Stormtroopers and the odd Fantasy figure. Rather garish of course but the  younger fillies may like them.

 Bye for now, I simply must fly , we’ll drive actually, I have to pick up an old chum from Barnard’s Castle who has landed in a spot of bother ( Mum’s the word!).

Editor’s comment:

For nearly thirty years Andy has been bringing a touch of class and the scent of Eau D’cologne to the competition wargames circuit. He is of course our full time tournament umpire and head of the Tercio charities committee. Our thanks to this Renaissance man for consenting to our visit. Andrew lives alone with fourteen cats somewhere near Aust service station.

      Hope you and your family are all well!
      He’s got drawers of immaculate miniatures. The only collection that I’ve seen was actually Churchill’s in Marlborough House!
