A hot topic of conversation amongst gamers has long been how to get new blood into an ageing demographic. Are younger players really going to commit to the time and effort necessary to paint three hundred miniatures? Is the busy family man going to be able to find the time? Will the fifty year old batchelor ever lift himself off his settee and unlock his wallet? Well the time is now!

The answer is of course Games Workshop Contrast paints. Add the new(ish) paints to the superb Footsore minis and you have a winning combination. These are barbarian heroes for my To the Strongest build. The games system recognises how the actions of individuals can sometimes sway a battle at key moments. So within two hours I’d done three Vandal heroes riding to victory.

You need to use the recommended undercoat but the Contrast paints are such a joy to use. Four colours covered most of the minis and all fine details were added but in the immortal words of Simon Clarke, ” only where they can be seen!”

I hate wasting paint, I really should get a wet pallette. With the spare paint I started on a new Late Roman group. Again contrast paints and Little Bigman transfers came to the rescue! After a while day of Birthday wargaming, this little foursome was finished in an hour.

So to all those doubters out there, when you hear potential recruits saying that they haven’t got the time- we have an answer!

  1. The age demographic is certainly an issue and I think the use of contrast paints could well play a part in getting a new generation up and running. 🤞 One thing I am looking forward to seeing as and when clubs get up and running properly again is if any new blood materializes given the shot in the arm Covid-19 lockdown gave to the painting side of the hobby. Interestingly when I have gone to Telfod the age group is much older than at Salute where it seems much younger. If true it looks like war gaming has a better future than modelling.

    1. Good points- it’s funny that gaming in its wider sense has never been so popular. I’m not sure I would start painting if I had Call of Duty or the Total War series. It maybe that the gaming collectables maybe our saviour- I’ve Ive played these in a video game and now I can get the miniatures?

      1. Could well be. I often wonder if the figures I sell on ebay find there way to a collector or a player. Something for me ask them perhaps.

      2. That’s interesting! An estate agent pal of mine said how many houses have games tables and collections, certainly far more people than you see in gamestores or competitions. Still a quite secretive hobby but much more visible than twenty years ago.

Are your unsuccessful generals replaced in the Carthaginian style – a little crucifixation to encourage the others?

    1. It’s for horses that I really notice it. When I used black undercoat I had to add about three layers over the top.
