By Michael Ferres

I was on a budget. I was attending Partizan wargames show for the very first time and I had twenty five quid. How could I survive on such a paltry amount???? I had to choose carefully , for perhaps the first time ever, and not buy the first things that caught my eye. What a challenge!

The result!

A challenge made easier by stumbling upon Partizan Press: Painting 28mm wargaming figures- The English Civil War and Thirty Years War.

Well worth the whole budget!

It’s a classic of its kind. Great coloured illustrations throughout and a real inspiration! The book gives clear instructions using easily obtainable paints. Another first for this month’s painting was the use of a wet pallette. I had about four paints on the go at the same time, making blends between miniatures easier and more gradual.

Shades of brown!

The book also referanced Pieter Snayers who I must admit I’d never heard of. A contemporary painter who uses quite a drab pallette of colour, but they look great!

The work of a genius
Would I be similarly retrained?

I usually choose a colour scheme, colour wheel and all, and then add a garish pink or purple at the last moment. Using the new book I managed to curtail my urges.

Musketeers done and no purple!
Some red I’m afraid!

So all that is needed now is to base and flag but that will have to wait until next weekend I’m afraid. I also have got to rebase my 15mm Normans for Command and Colors System X ( not that the BBC have provided inspiration!)

Three layers of rebasing for next weekend!

Thanks for reading, I shall post pictures of completed ECW units next week.

Have a great bank holiday!

Michael

  1. Book looks good, figures look good! 🙂 I have no figures in purple apart from a Chinese general and my VSF Martians, but I do have a red toolbox like yours!

    1. Thanks John! I was very controlled!!!! I have been tempted by Old World Cathays; such great painting around! Just two toolboxes left now: they did provide a good workout when filled with metal minis!!!

  4. Great buy – there’s nothing like a narrow purchase that works so well – to bring lots of satisfaction. We have all been there – a blitz of purchases that somehow end up gathering dust. Hope your armies are a success.

I guess you watched the travesty or some part of it? I read to reviews intending to watch but the reviews put me off. A poor man’s historic take with a cast of ten of games of thrones but not wars of the roses though. Instead wind back to 1066 and turn the lights out so you don’t notice the small cast….have I been misled?

    1. Less is definately more! My usual companion is a master of preserving his money shall we say and I even spent less than him!! Really enjoyed the painting though.
I don’t think im a rivet counter but I am suspicious of the BBc’s motives in afraid. Such an amazing story and it takes a real lack of imagination to turn people off. Still getting over the recent biopic of Alexander ( the Mediocre)😆
