Great wargaming news from the North : DBA/ Commands and Colors mash-up

Northern Dice Stud John Lavender is hard at work adapting Command and Colors to the much loved De Belli Antiquitatus system. Read below for more…..

Later Hoplite Greek vs Alexandrian Macedonian

We gamed this using the System X from the .net site

The army lists from C and C site: later armies are sadly missing though!

The Hoplites chose to defend a fordable river to counter the stronger Pike Phalanx and Companion Cavalry that appeared to favour the Macedonians.

Meet in the middle!

The Greeks took up a strong defensive position on their right and combined their cavalry on the left with their heavy Athenian Hoplites. The Theban sacred band was in the centre. (The special rules for the Companions and Sacred Band were used.)

The battle opened with the Greek Cavalry charging the Macedonian Light Cavalry as they tried to cross the river forcing them to Evade. Alexander then attempted to cross with his two units of companions during the fight the Macedonians lost a unit before Alexander eliminated one of the Greek Cavalry with a mounted charge and decimated the other.

The Athenian hoplites were forced to double time and intervene to stop Alexander riding around the Greek armies flank.

This weakened the centre and Philip of Macedonia led the Phalanx into the river and the Greeks defending the river bank.

On the other flank the Greek right watched the Macedonian left and neither side ventured forward over the river.

The battle swung in the favour of the Macedonians and then the Athenian Holpites moved to the centre and entered the fray and it looked like the gods would favour them but, although Philip’s Pikemen failed he fell back and joined his Hoplites and advanced to victory as the Greek Hoplite army broke.

6:4 Victory to the Macedonians.

The Victory Banners denote where a unit was eliminated. Blue denotes a Hoplite Greek unit eliminated and red a Macedonian unit.

I think the idea of using 12 units works well and I am working on a conversion of the DBA v3 lists to C&C unit types that will allow any army list to be used.

Cardiff Dice Studz will be keeping a keen eye upon developments and hopefully we can get John down South before too much longer.
