Wargaming with the Condottieri

Never keep a diary! Three years ago these miniatures were to be finished! And that is after the thirteen years wait that had elapsed since a threw out many of these exact same sculpts because they got mangled when we last moved house.

The mercenary host in full charge!

Well they are finally done! As part of my new policy of finishing off wargames armies, the remaining units are a priority! Thanks to Mark Morin for reminding me that projects can actually have a deadline.

These “ Condottieri” are from the fifteenth century and represent the mercenary bands raised by the contract of employment, the condotte.

The miniatures are from Mirliton and do have a drawback in that the metal is very soft. A few models fell at the last post and had to be binned as they broke legs and/ or lances.

The famous names of Attendolo, Colonna, Malatesa and Sforca live again!

I intend using Blue Moon miniatures to pad out the rest of the force as my French are huge in comparison and would not mix. Michelangelo ( below) is currently working on a tank for the baggage!

Plans are afoot!
Borgia poison incoming!

Have a great bank holiday!

These look brilliant, well done getting them finished! 🙂 A policy of finishing off wargames armies sounds a bit radical mind you! 😉 I hope it doesn’t catch on!

Nice to see condotta- I have a non existent condotta army or maybe armies even though it’s one of my favourite periods to read about – Michael malletts book remains in my top ten “mercenaries and their masters” and it’s not even a chronological account of the various wars!

I must search that book out! You are right though; there’s something about the armour, politics and architecture of the time. A mix of the old and new!
      Best wishes

I am lucky to have an original slightly damaged hardback picked up in the 1990’s in an early library book sale. But pen and sword republished a hardback facsimile version with an introduction from William caferro. I have a copy and it’s fine. Mallett published a detailed account of the Venetian war machine plus the Borgia’s, as well as a posthumous account about the Italian Wars.

Pen and sword versions sell around 15 quid but the originals with a pen and ink sketched knights cover sell at 40 or 50 quid.

Best of luck – the Newbury show – not been there in ten years but I did like it, not unlike VAP in York being a racecourse venue – often good light and space. I used to go for SHQ miniatures ( now with grubby tanks)….
